Trademark, designs and models: international registrations decreased in 2020!

The international registration applications of trademarks made through the Madrid System decreased of 0.6 % in 2020, with 63 800 applications. It is the first decrease since the 2008-2009 global financial crisis.

In the same way, the number of international protection applications of industrial designs and models through the La Haye System has also decreased. It fell of 15 % with 18 580 applications filed in 2020. It is the first decrease registered since 2006.

The global COVID-19 pandemic seems to be the root of these numbers. In general, trademarks, deigns and models indeed mirror the introduction on the market of new products and services, which were strongly impacted in 2020 by the unfavourable economic context.
